Laptops are distributed on a first come-first served basis, so if you are in need, request a laptop early!
- REQUIRED: Microsoft Excel. As a Valencia student, you have free access to Microsoft Word as well as Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, etc. for personal use. GRADING COMPOSITION:
Your grade will be determined by a POINT SYSTEM. The POINTS you earn on ONE exam, quizzes, individual and/or group assignments, class participation, attendance and any additional project or cases assigned will be totaled and then divided by the total number of points possible in a grading period. The result will be a percentage grade semester. Details on these assignments will be given in class. Each exam will cover information given in the discussions, lectures, and active learning sessions. Final letter grades are assigned using the following scale based on total possible points:

**This scale includes adjustments made for the subjective nature of grading; rounding will be if .5 or > .5 next number; the cut-off is rigid. For example, if we have 600 total points, 537 points represent 90% A and 536 points is an 89% B. * Extra Credit: I strongly suggest you do not miss out any opportunities to earn points because there are some extra-credit assignments throughout the semester. Every point counts!
EVALUATION:
You will get the grade you earn in this course. An “A” means excellent and a “C” is average. If you turn in average work you can expect an average grade. I do not give away grades.

GUIDELINES FOR ONLINE PARTICIPATION:
- Attendance and presence are required for this class. You are expected to log on a minimum of four (4) times per week (at any time during the week) and are expected to post a substantive contribution to the discussion with your thoughts and any questions on the material covered in each unit every week.
- Your participation in the discussion forum will count towards your participation grade (10 points worth each topic).
- Although I strongly suggest that all issues, questions, and problems be dealt with online, please do not hesitate to contact me by e-mail or at my office regarding these issues at any time.
- Use good “netiquette,” such as:
- Check the discussion frequently and respond appropriately and on subject.
- Focus on one subject per message and use pertinent subject titles.
- Capitalize words only to highlight a point or for titles—capitalizing otherwise is generally viewed as SHOUTING!
- Be professional and careful with your online interaction.
- Cite all quotes, references, and sources.
- When posting a long message, it is generally considered courteous to warn readers at the beginning of the message that it is a lengthy post.
- It is considered extremely rude to forward someone else’s messages without their permission, so always ask first.
- It is fine to use humor, but use it carefully. The absence of face-to-face cues can cause humor to be misinterpreted as criticism or flaming (angry, antagonistic criticism). Feel free to use emoticons such as :) or ;) to let others know that you’re being humorous.
I hope we will be able to share our thoughts and experiences with one another in the form of an active and stimulating discussion!
COMMITMENT:
To be successful in accounting, the average student spends about 8-10 hours per week outside of class studying.
Accounting is learned by understanding the concepts involved and applying those concepts in practice problems. Thus to master this course, you need to
- Read the material
- Participate actively in the discussion forum of the course material
- Complete the assigned homework
A a result, this course uses a great textbook that provides hands-on, step-by-step instructions for easy learning with an abundance of exercises and projects to reinforce new concepts. Each chapter builds on the previous chapter as you progresses from entering simple transactions to using advanced QuickBooks features. For that reason, it is crucial to read and complete all the hand-on practices identified as "Develop Your Skills" exercises throughout the chapter using your textbook and the software of QuickBooks. Then, you will be able to master what you were reading about the Basic Concepts and procedures by completing "Reinforce Your Skills" and "Apply Your Skills" exercises using QuickBooks.
In another word, please follow these steps in every chapter:
1. Complete "Develop Your Skills" exercises- in the chapter while you are reading the lesson
2. Then, complete "Reinforce Your Skills" exercise - at the end of the chapter and submit your answer in eLab through CANVAS under MODULES for every chapter.
3. Finally, complete "Apply Your Skills" exercises - The final step and the one that you should be submitting.

c. You have around 20 minutes to complete the syllabus quiz in Canvas for extra-credit and it has been properly identified in the tentative calendar. In addition, you have the opportunity to earn extra-credit after reading each chapter. In summary, extra-credit will be available throughout the semester at my discretion.
d. Every homework assignment (e.g. reinforce and apply your skills) and assessment (e.g. concept review quizzes, chapters tests, midterm, etc.) must be completed by the DUE date. They will not be accepted late.
e. Assignments must be submitted via the e-Lab through Canvas. Each chapter’s homework has a due date as posted in the calendar and in “e- Lab” system.
5. QUICKBOOKS CERTIFICATION EXAM (FINAL EXAM) POLICY:
**Important Note: Please, be aware that this arrangement below will depend on the status of the Coronavirus health crisis. If the authorized Certiport testing centers remain closed by the final exam week, then you will take your final exam different to the QuickBooks Certification Exam from the comfort of your home.
In another words, if the Certiport testing centers are open to the public, then you will be able to take your QuickBooks Certification Exam (final exam) at the West Campus Assessment Testing Center or at the New Horizons-Orlando Testing Center. If not, you will take a local final exam in Canvas from the comfort of your home depending on the status of the pandemic caused by the Coronavirus.
The QuickBooks (QB) Desktop 2021 Certification exam is your final exam in this course. Depending on the status of testing centers opening due to the COVID-19, this could be proctored at Assessment Testing Center in Valencia College, West Campus or at New Horizons-Orlando Testing Center located in 1221 Lee Rd., Orlando Florida 32810 from Monday, Nov.29, 2021 at 8:00 AM to Tuesday, December 07, 2021 before 3:00 PM at any time during their business hours. For that reason, you MUST schedule your appointment for proctoring services in order to take your Intuit QuickBooks Desktop 2021 Certification Exam. In this semester, you will have the opportunity to select ONLY ONE of the following two options:
- First Option: Register online with the West Campus Assessment Center located at SSB building by using the following link for their appointments. A proctoring fee for the testing appointment may be charged online during this semester. You should purchase the voucher for your QuickBooks Certification Exam in our West Campus Bookstore at the end of the semester, and then make your appointment online by clicking on the link https://www.registerblast.com/valenciacollege-west/Exam/List and select the following:
- Second Option: If you decide to take your QB Certification Exam in New Horizons-Orlando, then you need to contact them directly at (407) 210-4200 and make your appointment. However, there is a required $15 cash-proctoring fee at New Horizons-Orlando Testing Center. Then, you must request a receipt for your 2020 income taxes. The New Horizons - Orlando is an authorized Certiport Testing Center located at 1221 Lee Rd., Orlando Florida 32810 (see Directions). They usually open at 10:00AM on Mondays and close at 5:00 PM. However, they open at 8:00 AM from Tuesdays to Fridays and close at 5:00 PM. For that reason, please set up your testing appointment in a timely manner and please do not wait until the last minute because if you failed the first time, then you must wait one day (24 hours) before you try to retake the exam again.
It is required that you purchase your QuickBooks Certification exam voucher (the voucher cost of $140 approx., which includes access code to your QB certification exam, retake test if it is needed and three practice tests in GMetrix System) at the West Campus Bookstore and bring it to the Testing Center with you on your scheduled final exam date. Your Financial Aid Funds may cover this cost because this Certification Exam is required in the course.
It is crucial that you take unlimited practice tests provided in Canvas under “QB Practice Review” for your convenience.
In addition, it is crucial that you take the three (3) practice tests offered in the G-Metrix system with the purchase of your QuickBooks Certification exam voucher. You can take these practice tests online from your home (e.g., Additional detailed instructions will be provided to you by email). Definitely, these practice tests will help you to practice the required skills and feel more confident for your QB certification exam. You must answer 50 questions such as multiple choices, simulations and ordering/matching questions in 50 minutes. For that reason, it is imperative that you practice and practice prior taking your exam.
Proctor fee (testing center fee) applies when you take the exam so make sure to ask how much they will charge. (The testing center may charge around $15-$20 per exam.)
“Students with disabilities who qualify for academic accommodations must provide me a letter from the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) at the beginning of the semester in order to request special accommodation with Certiport for the Intuit QuickBooks User Certification Exam. For more details, please refer to the following link: http://www.certiport.com/PORTAL/desktopdefault.aspx?page=common/pagelibrary/Disabilities.htm if you have any question, please do not hesitate to contact me immediately. Please, remember to bring your VALENCIA ID CARD with you to the testing center.
The QB Certification exam (final exam) of this course enabled by Certiport will be timed (50 minutes for 50 questions that includes multiple choices, simulations, and ordering questions) and will only allow ONE-ATTEMPT. Once you enter the exam, you must complete it because you are allow to ONE-ENTRY.
- If you pass it, you will have the great opportunity to become an Intuit QuickBooks Certified User (QBCU) and receive 100 points in the final exam.
- If you did not pass it, then you can retake it after 24 hours but before Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at 3:00 PM. In another words, you can retake the QB Certification exam the next day after you failed the first test. However, you cannot retake it after Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at 3:00 PM in order to be considered for this course grading purpose.
- If you did not pass both exams, then this indicates that you did not pass the final exam (50 points). However, it does not mean that you fail in the course since I consider all the points accumulated in the calculation of your final grade.
*Important Note: I reserve the right to modify the schedule, flexibility is a must.
**Failure to take the QB Certification exam will result in zero point in your final exam. **
6. EXTRA-POINTS ASSIGNMENT POLICY:

HOW TO SUCCEED IN THIS CLASS:
This is an intense course. We will cover one chapter per week. In order to succeed in this class it is important that you follow these suggested guidelines:
- Read the syllabus and make note of important dates for assignments and exams on the class schedule. Please, be aware that I do not accept late work. Any work turned in late will receive a grade of zero.
- Read and complete all the hand-on practices identified as "Develop Your Skills" exercises throughout the chapter using your textbook and the software of QuickBooks. Then, you will be able to master what you were reading about the Basic Concepts and procedures by completing "Reinforce Your Skills" and "Apply Your Skills" exercises using QuickBooks.
- Read and complete all the hand-on practices throughout each chapter BEFORE taking the quiz.
- Listen to the online short tutorials or videos provided in Canvas under Modules and review the lecture notes.
- Spend time drilling down into the software. The exam requires that you know QuickBooks beyond the textbook explanations.
- If you want to pass the Certification, you must go beyond the minimum course requirements.
- Complete all homework problems assigned in a timely manner. Do not miss any of the end of chapter assignments since they will build on one another. Your success is dependent on completing all readings, homework, and exams.
- Practice good time management. In other words, don’t procrastinate. Allow yourself ample time to complete assignments so in the event you have trouble or need my help, you will have time to arrange this.
- Engage to form study groups.
- Make good use of the class resources (e.g. lab time, online content, tutoring online and in person and my virtual office hours).
- You should be spending approximately 10 - 12 hours per week to the time commitment. In order to succeed, this should be your minimum commitment to this course.

SUGGESTIONS: A METHOD OF STUDY
No one can adequately prepare for a journey without first consulting road maps and travel guides. In the same way, no one can prepare for a textbook without first pre-reading the material. The following is a method of study:
- Examine the outside references of a textbook. The title tells you what the text is about, and the blurb on a book gives your more of a synopsis of the material.
- Scan over the index in the back of a book. The topics with the most references expose an author’s biases. It shows the priority of concerns to the author.
- Read the author’s preface. This section reveals the author’s philosophy in presenting the course material. You will understand his/her objective with the current book.
- The Table of context shows the structure the author is using to achieve his/her objective. A well-prepared table of context also supplies the major topics of the text. These topics provide reference points on the road to mastering the text.
- Use the subtopics revealed in each chapter. These subtopics are usually presented as Chapter Objectives, Chapter Summaries, Section Headings (usually in bold face fonts), and questions at the end of each chapter.
- Turn each subtopic into a question by using the words: who, what, where, when, why and how.
- With a highlighter in hand, read through the text searching for the answer to this question. When the answer is discovered, highlight the answer and move on to your next question.
- After completing the chapter, close the book and trying writing out the answers to your questions. This becomes your first test on the material. When finished, compare your answers to the highlighted answers in the text. Correct any errors made. Then turn your paper over and retake the questions answered incorrectly.
- For each question, try to find the key word or phrase in the answer. This key word or phrase can be used in your notebook and index cards for a quick review of the material.
