COURSE DESCRIPTION
Continuation of CHM 1045C dealing mainly with equilibrium theory, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics and electrochemistry. Laboratory illustrates principles of ionic equilibria within framework of qualitative analysis. This course meets the General Education science requirement for graduation. (Special Fee: see current catalog)
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- Students will apply the scientific method to solve complex problems.
- Students will predict the physical properties based on molecular interactions.
- Students will investigate chemical kinetics.
- Students will apply the concept of stoichiometric relationships to solve chemical equilibria problems.
- Students will distinguish between various acid/base theories and apply them to equilibria systems.
- Students will apply thermodynamic laws to evaluate spontaneity of a chemical process.
- Students will utilize the relationship between equilibria, electrochemical and thermodynamic data to predict spontaneity of a chemical process.
- Students will apply laboratory techniques to solve a problem.
COURSE COMPETENCIES
The course seeks to strengthen students’ skills applicable to Valencia’s Student Core Competencies:
Think, Value, Communicate, and Act.
IMPORTANT DATES
Drop Deadline (no pay/record) January 18, 2022
Withdrawal Deadline:– March 25, 2022 withdrawing from a course will still require payment for the course and it will be transcripted as a W
College Calendar: http://valenciacollege.edu/calendar
NO SHOW POLICY
Class attendance is required for learning in an onsite class; students who do not attend class the first week of classes must be withdrawn by the instructor at the end of the first week as a "no show". If you are withdrawn as a “no show,” you will be financially responsible for the class and a final grade of “WN” will appear on your transcript for the course.”
ATTENDANCE POLICY
This rigorous science course will build a foundation of knowledge for your future interaction with scientific knowledge. There is a large amount of material to cover and every week will include major learning objectives. History shows that participation issues usually precede failure of this course. Additionally, multiple research studies show engagement in school is correlated directly to success in a course. With this in mind, participation in this course is expected.
Please Note: I will not withdraw you for any reason other than the before described process of Withdrawal for No-Show during the first week. It is your responsibility to withdraw yourself before the deadline if you wish to receive a W for the course. I will submit the grade to Atlas that you earn in the course based on point accumulation.
WITHDRAWAL POLICY
“A student who withdraws from class before the withdrawal deadline of 3/25 will receive a grade of “W.” A student is not permitted to withdraw from this class after the withdrawal deadline; if you remain in the class after the withdrawal deadline, you can only receive a grade of A, B, C, D, F or I. An I grade will only be assigned under extraordinary circumstances that occur near the end of the semester. If you receive an I, the work missed must be made up during the following semester, at which time you will get an A, B,C,D or F. Failure to make up the work during the following semester will result in you getting a grade of F in the course. Any student who withdraws from this class during a third or subsequent attempt in this course will be assigned a grade of “F.”

If you are unable to participate in the course due to illness, family emergency, etc., please communicate with me as soon as possible in order to create a plan to complete any missed assignments so that your learning can progress in your course. In the case of a prolonged absence, please communicate with me as soon as possible in order to create a plan for the best course of action.
LATE WORK/MAKEUP POLICY
When submitting late assignments and labs, you will have the opportunity to earn some of the points – but consistent late work will eventually have a negative impact on your grade. You will have ample time to do your assignments, so there should rarely be a need for late submissions. Please communicate with me if you are struggling to maintain good submission standards in this class. Exams will be open for a minimum of three days, so there will be makeup opportunities on exams. Please plan accordingly and let me know as soon as possible if you have a conflict with the test dates.

COMPUTER/EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS
In today’s computer-based society, it is imperative that students develop computer skills. Therefore, students are expected to use online technology to assist in the learning process. At a minimum, students are expected to login to the online learning platform (i.e. Canvas) where course syllabus and faculty information are located. We will use a couple of educational resources that can be used with a computer (see link above if you need one) or a phone.
You will be submitted a lot of your work as a pdf. The easiest method is with your phone using a scanning app. Do not upload multiple picture files into assignments – use a scanning app or copy pictures into a word document. I need to be able to grade your work. Please reach out if you have questions – I am here to support your learning.
Internet Explorer is not compatible with Canvas and is not recommended. Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Safari web browsers are recommended for use with Canvas. If you are having issues using one of these browsers, please try using another.

Valencia has a thorough grievance policy found in the Student Handbook. In this course, there are two major academic grievances you may wish to pursue. In both cases, the first course of action is to speak with your instructor about your concerns. The best thing you can do for success in college is to be proactive in communicating with faculty (me), so start seeking assistance early and before it is too late. If you feel you need more support or assistance then you will want to reach out to the Dean of Academic Affairs, Michelle Foster mrfoster@valenciacollege.edu.
