Assignment 7: Mineral Identification

Introduction

Mineralogists are scientists who study minerals. One of the things mineralogists must do is identify and categorize minerals. While a mineralogist might use a high-powered microscope to identify some minerals, most are recognizable using physical properties. Minerals can be identified by their physical characteristics. The physical properties of minerals are related to their chemical composition and bonding. Some characteristics, such as a mineral’s hardness, are more useful for mineral identification. Color is readily observable and certainly obvious, but it is usually less reliable than other physical properties.

1) This assignment is designed to assist you in learning the concepts of this module as well as assess your understanding and application of the content. Since this assignment is a combined Formative and  Summative Assessment of the module, it is considered a high-stakes assignment and will have a significant impact on your grade. To ensure that you understand and can apply the content, you will be provided two (2) opportunities to complete this assignment with the highest grade being kept as your final grade.
