The Discussions tool is an ideal way to engage students in conversation about course topics. It makes active learning available at any time (before the due date, of course!) and gives each student the space to participate thoughtfully. This is especially helpful for students who are shy or hesitate to speak in front of others yet have valuable contributions to make to the discourse. For online classes, Discussion is the tool that best enables the creation of a sense of community within a class.
Announcements are the primary way to communicate important information online to your entire course at once, such as a welcome message at the beginning of the course. By default, announcements are emailed out to students, and they are notified on their phones if they have the Canvas Student app installed. You can also send messages to students using the Inbox (Conversations).
For this assignment you will need to complete the following tasks: (The links are to instructions, and see the video walkthrough below.)
Create a discussion. Write an open-ended prompt that has a clear purpose.
Create an announcement. You might use this opportunity to compose a welcome message that you would send out to students in one of your courses.
Your course should be published.
- (optional) Explore the Inbox (Conversations tool) to learn how to send and read emails from Canvas.
- (optional) Try out a videoconference by going to Conferences area in your course navigation menu.
- (optional) Try out the attendance tool if you teach face-to-face courses.
- (recommended) Review the Start of the Semester Checklist and also learn about Copying Course Content from another Canvas course or from a Blackboard exported zip file.
